The waymark coordinates are for the south entrance to the KS State Capitol building. Not surprisingly, our GPS did not work inside this massive stone building.
This time capsule was placed in the wall of the Capitol Rotunda on the second floor of the Capitol Building on 17 Sep 1987 to commemorate the bicentennial of the US Constitution. It will be opened on 17 Sep 2087, the Tricentennial of the US Constitution.
The time capsule was placed by the Commission on the Bicentennial of the United States Constitution, the Kansas Bicentennial Commission, and the State of Kansas.
The time capsule is beneath a marble sculpture of Amelia Earhart, a native of Atchison KS who became the first female aviator to fly across the Atlantic Ocean solo. She disappeared in the South Pacific attempting to be the first aviator to fly around the world at the equator. Her remains have never been found.
