There is an inscription at first floor
level in the centre of the building. It is carved into white stone and is
difficult to read fully. See the photos, but it appears to read as
follows:
These schools
erected in the year 1808
during the incumbency of the venble L. Law D.
D.
Anon and Archdeacon of Rochester
were enlarged in the year 1817 in
commemoration
of his completing the fiftieth year of his office
and in
token of the respect and veneration in which
his character was held
they
were conveyed with the ground adjacent
by the Very Revd The Dean & The
Chaplain of Rochester
to the perpetual use of the parish of St John
and
were further enlarged and restored
by public subscription A.D.
1859.
Below this inscription is a further
memorial to those scholars that lost their lives in the Great
War.
