The Regal Theatre cinema first opened its doors on the evening of 27th April 1938. This event was a classy affair, everyone (important) in Perth was there. The Theatre continued to show the moving picture through to 1976, at which time it turned to hosting the performing arts (plays and playwrights), as it does to this day. The name honours the then ruler of Australia, the English King, George VI.
The style is distinctively art deco, and according to the theatre website it is "one of the most important examples of art deco architecture in Western Australia." The interior has been restored several times, but the theme of the 1930s has always been maintained. Entry to the foyer is unrestricted.
