Charles Warren Fairbanks was born on May 11, 1852. He worked on the family farm and attended a small country school. He left home and attended Ohio Wesleyan University graduating in 1872. With experience as the co-editor of the University Newspaper, he took a job with the Associated Press immediately after graduation. In 1874, Fairbanks moved to Indianapolis where he briefly studied law and was admitted to the bar later that same year. While practicing law, Fairbank became interested in politics and ran for the United States Senate in 1893 but failed only to be elected in 1893. While in the Senate, Fairbanks was an advisor to President William McKinley. He was elected Vice President of the United State in 1904, serving under President Theodore Roosevelt. Fairbanks later sought the Republican Presidential Nomination but failed when Roosevelt supported William Howard Taft. In 1916 was once again nominated to be the Republican Vice-Presidential candidate, running with Charles Hughes. The pair lost in a close race to Woodrow Wilson and Thomas Marshall. Fairbanks returned to Indianapolis and his health soon started to fail. The City of Fairbanks, Alaska is names in his honor. Charles Fairbanks died at his home on June 4, 1918 and was buried in Crown Hill Cemetery.

Charles Warren Fairbanks was born in Delaware, Ohio on May 11, 1852. During his youth, the the future Vice-President saw his home used as a hiding place for runaway slaves on the underground railroad. Fairbanks attended Ohio Wesleyan University, graduating in 1872. Fairbanks served as the co-editor of the University newspaper and upon graduation accepted a job with the Associated Press in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1874, Fairbanks moved to Indiana where he briefly studied law and was admitted to the bar later that same year. In 1888, Fairbanks assisted Judge Walter Gresham in attempting to gain the Republican Presidential Nomination, a bid that failed but sparked Fairbanks interest in Politics. He ran for the United States Senate in 1893 but that bid fail, only to be elected in 1896 after receiving the support of President William McKinley. During his years in the Senate, Fairbanks was a trusted friend and advisor to President McKinley. Fairbanks was elected Vice President of the United States in 1904 on the Republican Ticket with Theodore Roosevelt. Fairbanks served all four years with a Roosevelt and sought the Republican Presidential Nomination in 1908 but failed in his bid when President Roosevelt supported William Howard Taft. Fairbanks returned to practice law in Indianapolis. In 1916, he again sought the Republican presidential nomination, and although he failed in that bid, he did win the nomination for vice president as the running-mate of Charles Evans Hughes on June 10. Five months later, Hughes and Fairbanks lost a close election to the Democratic incumbents Woodrow Wilson and Thomas Marshall. Vice-President Charles Warren Fairbanks died at his Indianapolis home on June 4, 1918. He is resting in Crown Hill Cemetery.
