The Bijou Hills sit primarily on an east to west axis from the Missouri River on the west and for about 13 miles to the east. SD Hwy 50 runs north and south through and between the Bijou Hills and is the primary access highway. The main ridgeline of these hills is 2,100 feet above sea level, with the altitude of the Missouri in this region at about 1,475 feet. The plains surrounding the hills are at about 1,700 feet. The Bijou Hills are quite prominent and unique and can be seen for many miles distant in all directions. One explanation for these unique and curious hills is that they are rare remnants of glaciation artifacts. There is an old town of Bijou Hills on the slopes of the hills, which has fallen to ruin excepting for a few local residents that reside at the old town site.
