Created during the Okanagan Thompson International Sculpture Symposium in 2002, these three laser-cut steel business men, interlocked in running motion, carry resin-cast briefcases full of bits, baubles and trinkets contributed by the community.
Running Man was selected to stand at the Queensway Transit Station to remind all passing pedestrians and commuters how rushed we tend to be in our lives, sometimes forgetting to pause a moment to smell the roses.
The Okanagan Thompson International Sculpture Symposium, from May to September of 2002, was hosted by eight communities in south central British Columbia, spanning 200 km. from Osoyoos to Kamloops.
A juried competition in October 2001 led to commissions for 20 sculptors from across Canada and around the world to work in this region-wide “open air” gallery.
Residents and visitors had the opportunity to see dramatic works of art fashioned from raw materials while discussing passions and inspirations with the artists themselves.
Each of the participating communities benefits from the legacy of the permanent works of art and the opportunity to observe and interact with the artists at work over an extended period of time.
We became interested and supportive of the 2002 symposium primarily due to Jock Hildebrand’s enthusiasm and dedication to the project. We were and still are inspired by sculptures and other forms of art.
