During the Cold War a system of air warning sirens was installed in the Netherlands. In 1993 this has been modernized and is now called waarschuwings- en alarmeringssysteem or WAS in Dutch.
The entire system is being tested on the first Monday of each month at noon sharp. The purpose of these tests is not only to test the functionality of the sirens but also to keep the civilians alert.
