Red Lake, located in Brule County, SD about 8 miles southeast of Chamberlain, is a valuable waterfowl breeding and resting area.
As the photos demonstrate, the lake has little or no water due to recent drought conditions in South Dakota.
As one approaches this lake region, from any direction, one can discern the "pothole" which is many miles in diameter, thus creating a huge cauldron or "shower drain" effect. Red Lake was created by receding glaciers during the Pleistocene period.
The primary coordinates given for this National Natural Landmark are in the Red Lake State Public Shooting Area, and one can follow an old vehicle track down to the "shore" of the lake.
It is possible to drive around the perimeter of the lake, and there are many places were remnants of fishing and resort activity can be discerned. This was a very popular fishing lake at one time.
