Le 1er octobre 1975, à 19 h 47, une déflagration à l'usine d'explosifs CIL de McMasterville, au sud-est de Montréal, se fait sentir à 8 km à la ronde. L'explosion tue huit ouvriers sur le coup et en blesse sept autres.
L'explosion survient dans un petit bâtiment de l'usine CIL où se fabriquait un nouvel explosif, le PowerMax 500. Commercialisé depuis le printemps 1975, ce composé chimique sert de substitut à la nitroglycérine.
La déflagration fait voler en éclats les fenêtres de maisons situées aux alentours de l'usine et provoque un incendie important. Des flammes sont visibles jusque dans les villages voisins de Saint-Bruno et de Saint-Basile-le-Grand. Sur le site de l'usine, des morceaux de tôles tordues et des pièces de bois jonchent le sol.
La présence de curieux, alertés par les flammes, ralentit le transport des blessés vers l'hôpital de Saint-Hyacinthe.
Pendant une partie de la soirée, les pompiers craignent que l'incendie causé par la déflagration ne rejoigne des wagons remplis de dynamite entreposés sur le site de l'usine. Des artificiers de l'armée, habillés de vêtements d'amiante, empêchent que ce dépôt d'explosifs soit atteint par le feu. Une fois le calme revenu, des policiers et des secouristes ratissent le secteur de l'usine à la recherche de survivants.
At 19:47 on October 1, 1975, a deflagration in the explosives factory CIL de McMasterville, Southeast of Montreal, is felt 8 km to the round. Explosion kills eight workers on the spot and wounded seven others.
The explosion occurs in a small building of the CIL plant where is manufactured a new explosive, the PowerMax 500. Marketed since the spring of 1975, this chemical compound serves as a substitute for nitroglycerin.
Deflagration stolen shattered the Windows of houses located around the plant and causes a major fire. Flames are visible even in the neighbouring villages of Saint-Bruno and Saint-Basile-le-Grand. On the site of the factory, pieces of twisted sheets and pieces of wood litter the floor.
The presence of curious, alerted by the flames, slowing the transport of the injured to the hospital in Saint-Hyacinthe.
During part of the evening, firefighters fear the fire caused by the blast to join filled with dynamite cars stored on the site of the plant. The artificers of the army, dressed in clothes of asbestos, prevent that this magazine is reached by fire. Once calm returned, police officers and rescue workers comb the area of the plant search for survivors
