The Calder and Hebble Navigation completed in 1770 consisted of artificial improvements to the River Calder and River Hebble to allow canal boats use what used to be un-navigable rivers.

It ran for 21 miles from the Aire and Calder Navigation at Wakefield to Sowerby Bridge, was one of the first navigable waterways into the Pennines. It was an extension westwards of the Aire and Calder Navigation.

Work began in 1758 to make the River Calder navigable above Wakefield. The navigation to Sowerby Bridge was completed in 1770, including a short branch to Dewsbury.

This part of the navigation is a true canal running parallel with the River Calder.

This bridge carries an unnamed road over the canal to connect the town of Elland with the main road to Halifax (A629).

Although this bridge carries road traffic it also has to be used if walking along the tow path because it switches from one side of the canal to the other at this point. If walking from the west it is necessary to pass under the bridge, continue for a few yards and then join the Halifax Road (A629) and walk back towards the bridge to cross over to the other side. If walking from the east the tow path leads up to this bridge and it is necessary to turn right onto the bridge, and then right onto Halifax Road (A629) to join the tow path on the other side of the canal.
