BREATH BY PAUL DE MONCHAUX/ COMMISSIONED BY/ NORWICH CITY COUNCIL IN 2010/ TO COMMEMORATE ALL VICTIMS OF WAR/ AND PROMOTE THE CAUSE OF PEACE/ THE LIVING HONOUR THE DEAD, /ONLY A BREATH DIVIDES THEM
"Description: Breath is made up of two elements: a tall central slab, flanked on each side by seven leaves? whose geometry suggests growth. The central element reflects Lutyens? stone of remembrance, a version of which Lutyens had included in his 1920 Southampton Cenotaph, one of four monuments which De Monchaux had framed in his 2000 Enclosure in Southampton?s Central Park. The flanking elements were derived from De Monchaux?s Silence, the memorial of 2007 set outside the World War Museum at St Lawrence, Jersey to commemorate the young men brought by the Germans to quarry tunnels, and who generally died after around six months of hard labour. All that remained were the U shaped metal cramps that they had used, and these served as the formal inspiration for the double column of Silence, adapted for the Norwich Breath, to suggest the possibility of growth and renewal as well as the ultimate fragility and one-way nature of the boundary between the contrasting themes of the two memorials."
