The arches are constructed from brick and each arch carries road traffic with one arch for each direction. The height of the bridge is determined by a bridge further to the east that carries the railway over the River Medway that allows marine access be beneath it.
To the east of west of this bridge the railway remains elevated until it is clear of the town where it turns to the south and gradually returns to a more normal level. Bridge building and making cuttings were expensive even in Victorian times!
This bridge is to carry the railway so access to the top level is not permitted. As well as roads, through the arches, there is a footpath through each arch for pedestrians. There is some on-road parking to the north of the bridge for which a fee is payable.
