JPMorgan Chase Tower is a 75-story skyscraper in downtown Houston, Texas. Completed in 1981 and reaching a height of 305.4 m (1,002 ft), it is the tallest pentagonal (five-sided) building in the world.
The building was designed by my I. M. Pei. In some early plans, the structure was going to reach up to 80 stories, however the FAA expressed concerns that additional height was a risk for aircraft going into and out of nearby William P. Hobby Airport. Even so, once completed it became the eighth tallest building in the world. It even surpassed the Aon Center in Los Angeles to become the tallest building in the USA west of the Mississippi River, a title it held until Los Angeles's Library Tower, now known as the U.S. Bank Tower, was completed in 1990.
The Chase tower has been competing with the Baltimore World Trade Center (located in Baltimore, MD) as to which building earns the right to claim the "tallest five-sided building in the world" title, see associated waymark: (
visit link) . For now, the JPMorgan Chase Tower is indeed still the tallest pentagonal building -- but since its five sides are not of equal size, the Baltimore World Trade Center earns the right to claim its mark in the "regular / equal-size pentagonal" category.
