DeSaussure College, NE. end of quadrangle, was used by Union and Confederate troops successively as a hospital. Originally called .'North,' the name honors Chancellor H. W. DeSaussure, first Director of the Mint, who was instrumental in founding the university and one of its first trustees. - South Carolina: A Guide to the Palmetto State, Columbia section , pgs. 227-8

This section of the Guide is discussing various buildings on the campus of  the University of South Carolina.  The building is the second oldest on the campus following Rutledge College located across the quadrangle.  The building continues to serve as a residence hall along with housing the Department of Social Work.
