Am 7. Juli 1881 wurde der Schriftsteller Josef Winckler als Sohn des damaligen Salineninspektors an der Saline Gottesgabe in Rheine geboren. Literaturgeschichtliche Bedeutung erlangte Josef Winckler mit den "Eisernen Sonetten" (1912-1914), der ersten Industrielyrik-Sammlung in der deutschen Literatur. Weit größere Popularität erreichte sein Schelmenroman "Der tolle Bomberg". Bis heute sind die von Winckler geschilderten Streiche des Freiherrn von Bomberg in Westfalen bekannt und beliebt. Mehr als 750.000 Exemplare des Buches wurden verkauft und zweimal erfuhr der Stoff sogar eine Verfilmung (1932 und 1957).
