Description:
Salmon P. Chase was born on January 13, 1808 in Cornish, New Hampshire. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1928 and studied law under U. S. Attorney General William Wirt and was admitted to the bar in 1829. In 1930 he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio where he became a prominent and respected member of the bar. Chase was opposed to slavery and defended escaped slaves under the Ohio Fugitive Slave Law on 1793. He became an early member of the Republican Party and was elected Governor of Ohio in 1855, becoming the state’s first Republican Governor. He served as Governor from 1856-1860, and sought the Republican presidential nomination in 1860 but had little support and the nomination went to Abraham Lincoln. Chase supported Lincoln in the general election. Following the election President Lincoln nominated him to become Treasury Secretary. During his time as Treasury Secretary, Chase was instrumental in placing the term “In God We Trust” on our national currency. Chase is also the subject of a trivia question – as his face was depicted on the $10,000 bill from 1928 – 1946. During the Lincoln administration Chase and Lincoln often found themselves at odds and on a number of occasions Chase threatened to resign. Once such resignation came in June 1864 and on this occasion Lincoln accepted Chase’s resignation. But Chase has strong support from others in the Republican Party and when Chief Justice Roger Taney died in October 1864, Lincoln nominated Chase as his replacement and was quickly confirmed by the Senate. Chase’s first act as Chief Justice was to admit John Rock as the first Negro attorney to argue before the Supreme Court. Chase in his capacity as Chief Justice presided over the impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson in 1868. Salmon P. Chase died in New York City on May 7, 1873. He was originally buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Washington D. C. He remains were later re-interred in Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio.
