The sign shows a golden coloured lion
with jaws open and one front leg raised. The pub name and brewery name are also
included and are also gold in colour.
The pub's website tells us:
"From the early 19th century until
the 1920s, 147 High Street had been The Golden Lion pub. The name lives on in
this Wetherspoon pub.
Before the late 1940s, 149 High
Street was the Rochester, Chatham and Gillingham Savings Bank, and before that
it was the City of Rochester and General Permanent Benefit Building Society,
from the 1930s dating from at least the turn of the century. Before its
amalgamation into the TSB, 147 High Street was a shoe shop, for at least 20
years."
