The first exchange in Canada began in 1832 as an informal stock exchange at the Exchange Coffee House in Montreal. In 1872, Lorn MacDougall, along with his brothers Hartland St. Clair MacDougall and George Campbell MacDougall, James Burnett and Frank Bond were the driving force behind the creation of the Montreal Stock Exchange (a name that was used until 1982 when it became the Montreal Exchange).

In 1965, the Montreal Stock Exchange moved to its current premises in the Tour de la Bourse at Victoria Square – touted then as the world's most modern exchange. It occupies the third and fourth floors of the 48-storey skyscraper.

In May 2008, the TMX Group Inc. was created following the combination of Montreal Exchange Inc. and TSX Group Inc. The group owns and operates the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX), the TSX Venture Exchange (TSX-V), the Montreal Exchange (MX), the Natural Gas Exchange and the Boston Options Exchange.
