The Palmetto Regiment was from South Carolina and saw service Mexican war in 1847. Only about 300 of the 1,200 members of the regiment survived the war. The monument dedicated in 1858 is in the form of a palmetto tree standing on an ornate base. Both the palmetto tree and base are constructed of iron. Along with the names of about 450 members who died in the war the monument is inscribed:
