Sgt. Joseph Bergeron was fatally shot near this point on May 1, 2010 while responding to a report of a carjacking. Another police officer, Dave Longbehn, of the St. Paul Police sustained a broken nose and other head injuries during the event.

The boulder is inscribed with the words "Sergeant Joseph Bergeron, Maplewood Police Department, gave the ultimate sacrifice on May 1, 2010. With heartfelt gratitude, the community reclaims this earth as sacred ground to honor a peaceful warrior."

The City of St. Paul has renamed the nearby section of the Bruce Vento trail as the Joe Bergeron Pass.

A Maplewood Police badge, numbered 357, is also engraved on the stone.

The memorial was dedicated Thursday, November 4th, 2010.
