In 2007, the Rotary Club of Roxboro, North Carolina organized the Ride of Honor for World War II veterans of Person County. Private citizens, civic organizations, city and county agencies and community businesses helped fund the project which took more than 100 vets and their family to Washington, D.C. to visit the
National WWII Memorial
on May 7.
With leftover funds, the Rotary Club installed a WW II Memorial at the Person County Court House
in Roxboro. It was unveiled on May 30, 2009 with over 500 people attending the dedication ceremony. The polished black granite monument is inscribed:
Dedicated to the men and women of Person County who served in the Armed Forces of the United States of America during World War II | [Emblem of Dept. of Defense]
World War II 1941 -1945
[Emblems of the armed forces] |
