A lovely mosaic of the landmark 1920s-vintage old Rote 66 brodge over the Arkansas River in downtown Tulsa greets visitors to the Performaning Arts Center downtown. It is the forst of three mosaics along the E 2nd Street side of the PAC.
The mosaic is a view of the bridge from the bank of the Arkansas, looking up at the curving arches and strong verticals of the bridge. The bridge is impressive and imposing in this perspective view. This mosaic makes you feel small, as you would if yo were actually on the ground looking up at the bridge.
The blue sky filled with pink wispy clouds suggests either sunrise or sunset. Sunrise could be a metaphor for the promise of commerce that Route 66 would bring to this area, and the country. Sunset could be a metaphor for the decline of Route 66 and the bypassing of this old bridge by larger more modern spans. Either way, sun's rays illuminate the far landscape which peeks through the arches of the bridge, while the bridge itself is bathed in shadow.
