The Gate of Dawn, one of the most important religious, historical and cultural monuments of Vilnius, is also interesting example of Renaissance fortification architecture.
Renaissance Gate of Dawn, one of 9 defensive gates constructed in 1503-1522, is the tallest one and was built in the most dangerous place in case of attacks. In 1799 Russians destroyed the Vilnius fortification together with all gates except of Gate of Dawn. It is thought that they were scared to demolish the place where the blessed painting was located. Thus, the Gate survived.
The Gate of Dawn ís the object of even European religious importance thanks to well known miracle painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Mercy, which is located in the chapel lately added on the town's side of the Gate.
The painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Mercy, in the Chapel of the Gates of Dawn is known all over the world. Many churches in other countries have copies of this painting. The picture, which is also called “Vilnius Madonna”, was painted in 17th century. It is painted in the Renaissance style, in tempera on oak boards, later repainted in oil. Since the middle of the 17th century it has been said to have miracle-working powers. The Holy Mother of God of the Gates of Dawn has been granted the title of Mother of Mercy twice.
