In a corner of the old city cemetery on Desaird Street in Monroe, there is a slight rise, topped by a memorial to Confederate dead.

The inscription reads "In memory of the Confederate soldiers buried in this cemetery. 1896"

There is a walkway leading up to the monument that notes "Monroe Chapter No. 514 U.D.C. 1907"

The other sides of the monument are unadorned except for four stone cannons that sit around the base of the monument. Atop the monument is the figure of a soldier peering off into the distance, his hand shielding his eyes from the son. He is facing in a northwesterly direction.
