This 2-storey masonry building was built in neo-classical style in 1855 by the van Brackle family. The van Brackles had owned and lived in a small house on the property since 1789. It has been somewhat altered and Victorian architectural features added after it was burnt in the Fireburn Insurrection of 1878. From the 1850s to 1880, it was owned and occupied, along with the neighboring building at Strand 11-12, by the American merchant, consul and planter William Moore, one of the most prominent men of his period. Other owners included pharmacist L. Faber, 1880-1916, the Danish firm Melchoir & Co. 1896-1912, Miss H.M. Roberts 1912-1926, Hubert S. Fleming and family 1926-1981.
