On the granite block upon which this crankshaft has been placed is a plaque with the following wording:-
Near this place stood Britannia works in which
sewing machines, lathes and diesel engines
were produced.
Above is a crankshaft from the type of
diesel engine which powered every Tank
Landing Craft built in Britain between
1939 and 1945.
Presented to the Borough of Colchester
Engineering Society and unveiled by
Cllr Westley Sandford JP, Mayor, on the
8th May 1997.

The crankshaft has been moved from its original place on the corner of St.Botolph's Street and Britannia Way to the forecourt of Colchester Town Railway Station. Co-ords updated. Thanks to Master Mariner for the info.
