Edificada por ordem de D. Pedro II, para defender a Póvoa de Varzim dos ataques de pirataria, a Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Conceição foi erigida no local do antigo Forte do Torreão, que ainda estava funcional no último quartel do século XVII.
Da autoria de Sebastião de Sousa, a nova fortaleza da Póvoa de Varzim foi construída entre 1701 e 1740. o complexo defensivo desenvolve-se em planta poligonal, com quatro baluartes interligados pela cortina muralhada. A entrada faz-se por um imponente portal, com passagem abobadada, coroado pelo escudo real e por uma sineira.
Na praça de armas dispõe-se um conjunto de edifícios de dois registos, que integra a capela. No interior do pequeno templo, foi erigido um retábulo de talha policroma, com tribuna e trono.
Actualmente, este espaço é utilizado como quartel da Brigada Fiscal da G. N. R..
