When an old tree in front of the Okmulgee County Courthouse was irrecoverably damaged in a storm, an artist was hired to turn what wood could be salvaged from the ruined and dying tree into a patriotic work of art that could be enjoyed by generations to come.
The tree was cut down and removed to the artist's studio. The artist carved the design and laquered the sculpture to preserve it. When finished, the sculpture was returned and installed on the stump of the tree that had provided the wood for it.
