Zuckerfritz, whose real name was Fritz Poth (* 1830; † 1906), was well known throughout the city. He always wore a military or conductor hat and around his neck, a gray silk scarf. His wheelbarrow was a gift from a local choral society. He earned his living as a peddler and by running errands or odd jobs. He asked for sugar cubes and cigar butts as a tip, which had earned him the nickname "Zuckerfritz" ("Sugar Fritz").
The life-size bronze statue, created in the early 1980s by the Wuppertal sculptress Ulle Hees, stands in Elberfeld's pedestrian area on the Kerstenplatz near the city-hall. It shows Zuckerfritz sitting on his wheelbarrow.
