The development of Colchester's residential expansion can be traced in this area, westward along the Lexden Road, by looking at the post boxes. They become younger as one moves away from the old town centre, as seen from the royal ciphers thereon.

The anonymous box was produced from 1879, this oversight of no royal cipher or 'Post Office' wording was corrected from 1887.
