Built around 1500 for Thomas Paycocke, this house is a grand example of the wealth generated by the cloth trade in the C16th. The original house was C15th but much altered c1600 and aqain in the C18th. A further restoration occurred in 1910 and the house is now Grade I listed.
It is timber framed, plastered with some exposed framing and brick nogging, and roofed with handmade red plain tiles. The main range of 5 bays faces north into West Street is c.1505. The three-bay wing to the rear of the right end is C15th/early C16th. Beyond this, and originally separate, is a two-bay building jettied to the left, of C15th build with a short connecting link. There is a three-bay rear wing near the left end of main range, with end jetty, built c.1570. There is an C18th stair tower in the angle to the right of it, and a C18/19th small extension to the right. The main range is of two storeys (the main range was reduced from an original build of 3 storeys c.1600).
The close-studded main elevation has been comprehensively restored in 1910 with carving of high quality by Ernest Beckwith, retaining some original carved woodwork.

Suffice it to say that the above is just a taster and the house really should be visited at least once, but preferably more often, to fully appreciate the incredible luxury that merchants of the time lived in and were able to afford.
