I located an online obituary for Eugene Deford here and reads:
Eugene Donald DeFord of Port Gamble
March 1, 1924 to May 6, 2012
Veteran
Eugene "Gene" DeFord passed away on May 6, 2012 at Kitsap Hospice in Bremerton. After graduating from North Kitsap High School, where he played baseball and football, Gene enlisted in the U.S. Marines during WWII and served as a forward observer on Saipan. He was honorably discharged as a corporal, and after returning home, Gene went to work for Pope & Talbot, Inc. in Port Gamble, where he worked for 40 years. During that time, he held every job available, retiring in 1986 as plant manager. Gene loved all sports, but particularly football. He was a modest man of remarkable intellect who considered the writings of Marcus Aurelius "light reading." Gene is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ann DeFord, of the family home, his son Kim, and his wife Marg, son Kirk DeFord, of Poulsbo and a sister, Marguerite Holcomb, of Olympia. He was preceded in death by his parents Ray and Marguerite DeFord and brothers Stewart and Ralph. Cremation will be at the Stone Chapel in Poulsbo. At his request, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kitsap Hospice Care Center. Carpe diem, Dad. You are far and away the most honorable man we've ever known.
This residence, along with the majority of residences and businesses in Port Gamble, is owned by Pope Resources and maintained by Olympic Property Group and many homes and buildings are available for rent/lease throughout the year.
