A pair of salmon "swimming" through the air

This pair of salmon are mounted atop of post near the river in Salem's Riverfront Park. The salmon are made from flat, individual pieces of metal. It appears that they may be designed to turn in the wind, although despite it being windy, I didn't see them move at all. At the base, a dedication plaque reads:
Wild Salmon in Every Direction "In our voices and deeds, the echoes of a great river" D.F. Charles To the citizens of Salem in commemoration of the contribution made by Portland General Electric and NW Natural to establish the amphitheatre at Riverfront Park.Where Riverfront Park now stands was Salem's industrial heart at the turn of the 20th century. Capital Lumbering, Matheny's Wharf & Warehouse and Salem Flour Milling were among the predecessors located in the approximate area of the amphitheatre today. Before Salem was settled, the Kalapuya Indians reaped the native bounty of the central Willamette Valley, and many wintered at this site. The dawn of the 21st century brings hope for the return in abundance of the cultural symbol of the Northwest wild salmon, which links all people together to the past and future. Dedicated June 26 1999 at the World Beat Festival (sponsor logos) |
