Underneath the main Roman Catholic Cathedral in San Salvador, another altar has been placed in front of the crypt of Archbishop Óscar Romero who was gunned down by a death squad in 1980. His assassination is recognized as the beginning of El Salvador's awful Civil War in which over 100,000 people were killed. His grave has become a shrine and the columns surrounding the altar depict several of San Salvador's Bishops in circular mosaic patterns including Óscar Romero.
