There are two separate food banks in Westbank, the other catering specifically to single parents.

Westbank's food bank has moved several times in the past, always searching for more affordable yet larger premises. It landed here in 2009, having finally accumulated sufficient funds to purchase its own premises.

Unlike many food banks, this one will accept perishable food items at their home location as they have a cooler and freezers on site. Given that this is a fruit growing region, much fruit and many vegetables are donated when in season.

Here's a short article on their history - thought it might be of interest:

'The Food Bank was started by Emmanuel Assembly Pentecostal Church in mid 1982 to assist church families affected by the high unemployment and high interest rates of the 1980s. It began as Robes, Loaves and Fishes. Being the only Food Bank in the Valley at that time, records indicate that people came from Peachland, Penticton, Naramata and Princeton to the South; Winfield, Oyama and Salmon Arm to the North. Later the name was changed to "Sharing the Harvest".

In 1994, the Food Bank moved to a new location with a new name "Westside Community Foodbank Society" to better indicate that the Food Bank was a Community endeavour. In the ensuring 15 years, the Westside Food Bank has moved twice more, each time into very small quarters.

Finally, after raising capital funds for 9 years, the Westside Community Foodbank Society, on April 2. 2009, was able to purchase a permanent home on Churchill Road in Westbank BC. This was only made possible through a large Grant from the Regional District, a large donation from Gorman Bros. Lumber and the West Kelowna Community's support of various fund raising endeavors by the Food Bank and Westside Holidaze.

Today, over 29 years later, the services of the Westside Community Food Bank are still needed and the West Kelowna community has met the challenge of "lifting people up".'
