Kept in working order during World War II as 'shadow premises' for the Greene King brewery of Bury St.Edmunds, this small brewery was the last to be brewing ales of many that existed in and around the area. Starting life in the C18th when Henry Skingley founded it, it became known as Gardner's Brewery after being sold in 1827, and finished brewing in 1941.

Now a Grade II listed this is a compact group of industrial buildings comprising six individual blocks, some in red brick in Flemish bond, and others timber framed and weatherboarded, roofed with an assortment of handmade red plain tiles, or red clay pantiles, or slate.

The brewing house, aligned north-south, is of brick, timber framed and weatherboarded with wooden louvres above, a hipped roof of plain tiles and pantiles, and the tapering round chimney on a square base to its south-west. Both are visible from Bridge Street. A timber-framed block to the north and aligned east-west with a tiled, hipped roof was beer store no.1. There is a small brick building to the south-west, closer to the road, with a tiled hipped roof and connecting link to a long range to the west of the main blocks and aligned north-south with a hipped slate roof. The malthouse, further east, is aligned east-west and built of brick with a slate roof and half-hipped at the east end only. The buildings are mainly of two storeys.
