Boka Ascencion is an inlet on the rugged Northern coast of the island of Curacao that gets battered by Northeast Trade Winds year-round. It is a sanctuary for several sea turtle species that come and lay their eggs on a tiny beach nearby.
Due to the constant winds and narrow passageway, Boka Ascencion's mouth is a wave-watcher's paradise: the ever-present periodic swells start rolling in at 1.0m-1.5m (3ft-5ft) and then hold at 3m+ (10ft+) for approximately 200 meters before slowly receding and eventually dying down right before reaching a narrow beach at the end of the inlet. This site is seldom visited by outsiders: few tourists know about it since the sanctuary is not advertised on the island's travel brochures.
To get to the site, park at N 12 16.062 W 69 03.595 and follow the one and only dirt trail to the beginning of bay (some home-made signs will lead the way). Once there, stay on the bay's South side and hike a little further on a primitive trail of sorts to the actual coastline: total hiking distance is 1.25km (3/4 of a mile) one-way, bring sturdy shoes due to rocky terrain and small cacti / thorns towards the latter part of the hike.
