At first sight the sign looks uninspired, however there is a lot of symbolism here. The red cross in the centre of the sign alludes to Takeley’s support for the Parliamentarians in the Civil War. The four trees in the NE and SW quadrants represent the great forest that once covered the area. In the SE quadrant is the 12th century Church of the Holy Trinity, and in the NW corner are the thre seax of the Essex county emblem. The ivy leaves around the outside of the sign is taken from the Roman habit of using ivy to protect against evil spirits.
