This cannon was captured from Orange Free State Forces by Australian forces during the Second Boer War in South Africa.
The cannon bears the inscriptions 'VRYHEID IMMIGRATIE' and 'ORANJE VRYSTAAT' in the Afrikaans language. These translate to 'FREEDOM IMMIGRATION' and 'ORANGE FREE STATE'.
There is a plaque affixed to the breech of the cannon in memory of the South African veteran Brigadier General A.J. Bessell Browne C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O., V.D., who was General President of the South African & Imperial Veterans Association from it's inception until his death on 3rd August 1947.
The Second Boer War was fought from 11 October 1899 until 31 May 1902 between the British Empire and the Afrikaans-speaking Dutch settlers of two independent Boer republics, the South African Republic (Transvaal Republic) and the Orange Free State.
