The Rev Harry Nettles needs funds for the church roof and asks Lovejoy to value some articles for sale. The stuff is relatively worthless, except for a bowl, being used by Harry to feed the dogs. It is a rare Smoke Your Nose bowl worth tens of thousands of pounds.

Outside the church is a field which is about to be developed for a leisure centre, despite the opposition of the vicar. The vicar tells Lovejoy that there is a roman palace under the field, originally discovered in Victorian times by a Rev Henty, assisted by the the verger Rudge. The vicar tells Lovejoy that Henty wrote a book and wagers Lovejoy that he can have the Smoke Your Nose bowl if he can find the book and stop the development of the field. The planning hearing is in one weeks time.

Lovejoy and Lady Jane go to the British Library and find the only copy of the book is out for duplication and will be out for a week. Lovejoy then decides to enlist the help of the county archaeologist, Nancy Phelan. She tells him she doesn’t have the funds and has 36 monks to bury with the funds she has. Whilst in her hut Lovejoy notices a package from the British Library and he takes it away with him. It is a copy of Henty’s book.

Unfortunately for Lovejoy, Eric does the post and, thinking the British Library package has been wrongly delivered, he re posts it. As a last ditch attempt Lovejoy gets the vicar to offer to bury the 36 monks if the archaeologist will do the excavation. Nancy Phelan declines. The vicar, however recognises Ms Phelan. She used to be engaged to Derek Rudge, grandson of the verger and the owner of the land to be developed.

Tinker is primed by Lovejoy to ask the planning committee about the relationship between the developer and the county archaeologist. Fortunately he doesn’t have to ask the question, as Ms Phelan distributes Henty’s book at the last minute and halts the planning application.

An aggrieved Derek Rudge tries to dig up the field and ruin the roman palace, but is stopped in time by the vicar.

As a sub plot, Eric has managed to sell a grandfather clock to a Mr Rosenbaum for £8000. He has been given a cheque, but cannot present it for seven days. In the meanwhile there have been several higher offers for the clock. Lovejoy makes Eric stick to his word to Mr Rosenbaum. When the seven days are up Lovejoy and Eric go to the bank with the cheque. On the way to the bank they see Mr Rosenbaum being restrained and taken away in a private ambulance. The clock does get a buyer however. Lovejoy gives the Smoke Your Nose plate back to Harry Nettles. A valuation of the plate makes it worth £70,000. As a gesture of appreciation Harry buys the clock for £10,000.
