This tree was planted in recognition of Rotorua's sister city relationship with Beppu City, Japan.
The plaque reads:
THIS RIMU TREE WAS
PLANTED ON 17 SEPTEMBER 1997
TO COMMEMORATE THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY
OF THE SISTER CITY RELATIONSHIP
WITH BEPPU CITY, JAPAN
The tree is found in Rotorua's beautiful Government Gardens, which contains dozens of places of historical significance and is framed by several beautiful buildings.
The rimu tree is a significant native conifer in New Zealand and is protected from logging. It's noted as being a 'slow starter' so I hope the fact that this specimen is not even 2 metres tall after 15 years is normal. However, it can reach heights of up to 50 metres when fully grown. Rimus can live 1000 years although 500-600 is more the norm.
Twin Cities / Sister Cities: Beppu City, Japan and Rotorua, New Zealand
