The statue was made by Felix-Antoine Bouré in honour of King Leopold II, who opened the original, lower damm in 1878. It measeures 13,5 m high, 16 m long and 5 m wide. It is made out of 123 granit blocks, weighing 300 tons. It was inaugurated in 1993.
The damm was increased in height from 47 to 64 m in 1967-1971, in order to increase the lake's capacity from 13,3 to 26,4 million m3 of water.
Apart from supplying hydropower, the lake also serves as a potable water reserve.
