When the Cloverdale area was the new part of town, the churches in the city began looking at establishing new congregations. St. John's Church decided on a mission church in 1907. The first vestry was elected in 1908, and the cornerstone laid in 1910. The church is made of stone, with stained glass windows, elaborate wood carvings, and stone floors. It was designed by famed Gothic architect Ralph Adams Cram of Boston. Ascension became a full parish in the Diocese of Alabama in 1911. In 1984 a fire in the church devastated the community, but they rebuilt and continued to grow. There is a day school at the parish. More information can be found at the church website below. I will use the date they laid the cornerstone for the date built section, although many additions have been made over the years.

The church is located at the intersection of Clanton Avenue and South McDonough Street. It can be reached from downtown and I-85 by going south on Hull Street and turning right on Clanton. The office is located on Clanton but the main entrance is located on South McDonough. There is parking across the street and along the road.
