The Rochdale Canal was built to connect Manchester on the western side of the Pennine Hills and Sowerby Bridge on the eastern side. The first stretch of the canal connecting Manchester with Rochdale was opened in 1799, with the rest of the canal complete by 1804.

The bridge was originally the 89th from Sowerby Bridge but other additional bridges in between have been added since. It was built of bricks and has a single arch that crosses both the canal and the tow path. Like many canal bridges it was built next to a lock (number 84) because the canal is at its narrowest point.

At some point the bridge was widened with a concrete section on the eastern side of the bridge. As a result the lock gate arms had to be shortened. This meant there was no longer enough leverage to operate the arms in the normal manner. The windlass has a gearing mechanism with metal chains connected to the arms to make them easier to operate.
