Sorrento Beach is one of Perth’s traditional northern beach suburbs and site of the Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club, which was established in 1958. It is part of the first continuous sandy beach north of Trigg Island.

However, problems with beach erosion have led to the construction of three 50 metre long rock groynes across the 600 metre long beach. The groynes are located either side of the surf club, while 500 metre north of the club is the large curving southern breakwater of Hillarys Boat Harbour, which extends one kilometre out to sea. Waves average about one metre and maintain a relatively steep beach with a narrow, continuous attached bar.

There is a large 250 space sealed car park off the highway adjacent to the surf club. Today the surf club with its high watchtower sits between the two groynes, with a seawall fronting the club and car park.

Just a short 20 minute drive north west of Perth along the Sunset Coast, Sorrento Beach offers excellent family swimming. Here, turquoise water laps against pure white sand, making it an idyllic spot for a relaxing afternoon of beach fun. As well as the surf life saving club, there are grassed areas to enjoy a picnic, a kiosk, and change rooms.

Not far away is the bustling Hillarys Boat Harbour which is home to plenty of restaurants and cafes, as well as the Aquarium of Western Australia.
