On the marble walls of Auckland Museum's 3rd level are the names of the 11,671 men and women killed in World War II, inlaid with bronze leaf. Only the dead of the Auckland province are commemorated.

The names of those killed in the Merchant Navy during World War II were not originally included in the Roll of Honour. This was because they were never officially members of the armed services, despite the fact they risked their lives ensuring food convoys reached Great Britain and our official armed forces serving overseas. Their names were added in 1996.

Amongst the Rolls of Honour in the World War II Hall of Memory stands an empty panel of marble. It bears the simple yet heartrending inscription “Let these panels never be filled”.

The altar in the World War II Hall depicts a victorious figure on top of a globe, representing the global theatre of war. Three stained glass windows behind the altar represent the insignia of those who fell in units not represented elsewhere, including the nurses, WAAFS, WAACs and WRNZNs. The women, elderly and children who remained at home are also included.

In the World War II Hall of Memory the ironwork supporting the Roll of Honour books are formed in the shape of poppies, reinforcing the symbolism used in the original brasswork. It re-emphasises the loss of a second generation of Auckland’s youth.

The centre of the wall has the following inscription:
1939-1945
THEY WHOM THE INSCRIPTIONS UPON THESE WALLS COMMEMORATE
ARE THOSE FROM THE PROVINCIAL DISTRICT OF AUCKLAND WHO
AT THE CALL OF KING AND COUNTRY LEFT ALL THAT WAS DEAR TO THEM
ENDURED HARDNESS FACED DANGER AND
FINALLY PASSED OUT OF THE SIGHT OF MEN
BY THE PATH OF DUTY AND SELF SACRIFICE
GIVING THEIR LIVES THAT OTHERS MIGHT LIVE IN FREEDOM
LET THOSE WHO COME AFTER TO SEE TO IT THAT THEIR NAMES
BE NOT FORGOTTEN

A book "Record of the Fallen" sits beneath this inscription. A database that contains very detailed information on all who are commemorated on this wall can be found at muse.aucklandmuseum.com/databases/Cenotaph/AdvancedSearch.aspx.
