According to Wikipedia, some of the plants have been bred by internationally celebrated rose breeders. Each November, the gardens are host to the Parnell Festival of Roses, which showcases craft stalls, art exhibitions, music, strolling performers and thousands of roses. The park is named after the longest serving mayor of Auckland, who served for 18 years.
The 'white garden' is a popular venue for weddings. As of 2010, the park was home to the oldest manuka and the largest pohutukawa tree in Auckland.
