The design of the Walt Disney Concert Hall was first conceived in 1987 but the building was not completed until 2003 due to numerous budget overruns, delays and other problems. Had it been completed in a timely fashion, it could have been the building that propelled Frank Gehry to the status of world-renowned architect. Instead, that honor goes to the similarly designed Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, which, though started after the Disney Hall, was completed before it in 1997.

In spite of the time it took to complete, the finished building was not without issues, both outside and inside. Certain surfaces on the stainless steel exterior were reflecting and intensifying sunlight much like a magnifying glass. There were reports of traffic cones melting and nearby apartments overheating. A computer analysis was performed in order to identify the offending surfaces which were subsequently sanded to remove the excessive glare.

On the inside, the superb acoustics turned every cough into part of the performance. To compensate, complimentary cough drop dispensers were placed in the lobby.

The stamp is part of a souvenir sheet commemorating modern architecture in America.
