About the Subject
When England's most prolific poet, William Wordsworth, was attending the village Grammar School, he stayed in the cottage with Anne Tyson who looked after him and his brother. Allegedly scratching his initials on a window sill, next to his brother's.
Up the stairs to the left is a small room, supposed to have been used as a religious meeting place.
Visiting
The painting is in the care of Hawkshead Market Hall Trust and currently on display upstairs in the main hall. There is no charge to enter nor to view. The upper floor of the Market Hall is mainly used by local groups for activities, and is accessed directly through a side door on west side of the hall or through the lower room and up the wide staircase. If the Market Hall upper room is not open when you visit, please contact a key holder for free entry on 015394 36452. Often there are traders in the lower room through which you can access the staircase to upper floor.
Date
The painting date is uncertain, but looking at the content. There is a horse drawn cart and the figure's dress suggest mid Victorian at the latest.
