Deputy Sheriff Ernest C. Loll was killed in the line of duty at this spot on September 29, 1935 when he was investigating a report of bird poachers; he was speaking with one individual when he was ambushed by a second man who shot him with a shotgun from behind a nearby bush.
The men escaped, leaving the Deputy mortally wounded but alive. Individuals who lived nearby returned home to find the Deputy shot, but still alive. He died shortly after.
The two suspectes were located in Moclipse, Washington, captured and returned to Oregon, where they confessed to the killing.
The suspects were George Leonard Fiedler and August Ferdinand Weston, both 23, both of Portland, both with criminal records. Oddly, Feidler was proven to instigate the attack but received the lesser punishment.
